Doing what we don’t want to do to get what we want

When people tell us what they want to accomplish, we tend to offer advice on what they need to do to get it. We often hear the phrase, “easier said than done.”

We want to be debt-free, but we still shop using our credit cards. We want to be physically stronger, but will not commit to a strength training program.

When I began this blog, writing the content was easy. I knew my content focus and started writing content over a year ago. The hard part was learning a virtual platform and setting it up. Learning new technology is not my wheelhouse. The more I tried to learn, the more I got in the weeds over minor details that didn’t matter. I got frustrated and began to second guess my decision to blog.

I was not excited to learn a new skill. But I knew I needed to learn something new to reach my goal. I just wanted it done. But It doesn’t work that way. There are steps we must go through to yield desired results. The process is necessary.

On my journey to blogging, wisdom has been shared with me from people I have admired from a distance.   These pearls may encourage you.

1.       Write it down and set a date – Seeing is believing. Once I wrote down the launch date for the blog, it gave life to the project. It was the agitator for me to act. After writing a date on my calendar, I began to speak it and the combination gave me energy and accountability.

2.       Ask and you shall receive – In the past, I preferred to work alone, rather than to ask someone for help. If they helped me, I was afraid of taking too much of their time or asking too many questions that may not matter.  Now, I am more comfortable asking people around me for help.  I know many people who have websites and blogs who were willing to help. When I asked a co-worker for help, she didn’t hesitate to agree to help me. We scheduled meetings, she answered my questions and affirmed my way of learning.

3.       Imitation is not a bad thing – Find someone who is doing what you want to do and copy them. I bet there is someone you know and admire. Ask them to mentor you. Ask what books they read and how often they read. Find out what habits they keep.  Give it a try and see where it takes you.

 4.       You can’t fail if you don’t try – I have a niece with an entrepreneurial spirit. She has led a modeling group, she’s been a nail artist and now sells eyelashes under her LLC business license. What I love about her is her sense of moving forward to “the next.” If a business venture doesn’t work out, she moves on and tries again.  If you find something isn’t working on your way to reaching your goals, it doesn’t mean you failed. Look for the lesson and try again.

I acknowledge writing is my God given gift and I am going to perfect it and use it. Have you explored what your unique gift or talent is? We each have a gift or talent within is. We deserve making time to explore what that is. I encourage you to find your gift. Grow and perfect your gift to share with the world. The world needs it
