Quieting Our Minds this Advent
This Advent, I wanted to center myself by reading the Book of Luke in the Bible. reading one chapter a day this month, I will complete the book by Christmas Eve. On day 10, I read the story of Mary and Martha; two sisters who welcomed Jesus into their home. While Mary sat at Jesus’ feet listening to his teachings, Martha was busy preparing for their meal. Eventually, Martha gets fed up and asks Jesus to make Mary help. But Jesus responds, “Mary is caring for the better part.”
Mary wasn’t concerned about what needed to get done, she was living in the moment. As I let the story marinate in my mind and spirit, I asked, “How can I be more like Mary during Advent?”
Each year, I become anxious about my to-do list and desire to slow down from all that stuff. This year, I want to experience everything Christmas in this southern culture. But the 70-degree temps and lack of snow challenge me to feel the Christmas season. Yet, I was committed to experiencing all things holiday NOW; concerts, holiday markets, Charleston Place Christmas Trees, and all I could THIS YEAR! I often forget I am not on vacation. I live here and there will be other Christmases.
I began honoring Advent by rising early in the morning to sit quietly in front of our decorated Christmas tree; one the lights from the tree illuminating the room.
On the 10th day, I stared at the tree and gave thanks. In that space, I asked God what I needed to do to receive the gifts of Advent He has for me. I asked for His help to release the unimportant to make room for what is important.
This helped slow my mind down and be present in His presence.
If you are like me and desire to slow down this season, I pray you can find a way to receive and experience the wonder of God’s precious gifts of peace, hope, love, and joy this season of Advent and Christmas. I pray we don’t covet those gifts but share them with others.
