On The Road Again

Curnell and Amy’s Road Trip Selfies

We always remember to get a pic before a road adventure begins.

On the Road Again!

I love road trips! I enjoy traveling to a destination in a car or truck, especially with my husband.

On our first road trip together, I thought I had hit the jackpot. I had always wanted a partner to travel with but had never met that person until Curnell. He was chill.  He read the road signs and mile markers, he knew how long it would take to get from place to place, he didn’t require a lot, and was happy to let me drive when I wanted to.

Curnell and I have travelled many miles together, mostly toward the south. We have more hours in a car together than many may care to spend with their spouse. For us, a road trip is our low-key love language.  It is a place where we can connect.

The ingredients for a perfect road trip include salty snacks, hard candy, Blow Pops, lots of water, and a tight playlist.  A restroom break at a Love’s or Pilot Truck stop is necessary to get a cup of fresh brewed coffee to keep us alert.

When our lives get busy or hard, one of us will say to the other, “I need the road.” And that triggers the planning for a trip.

The world is busy and loud. We are expected to remain connected with everyone and everything 24 hours a day through our electronic devices. Driving gives us time for our minds to get quiet and time to connect.

With all that craziness, a multi hour road trip is a perfect exhale for “our time.” We can focus on each other without distractions. We have conversations that we may not normally have at home because we give each other more grace when we are relaxed and rested.

Many of our trips are made memorable by the stops along the way. Wineries in any state, (Sommerset Winery in Sommerset, KY; Willow Creek Winery in Silver Creek, NY; Buck Creek Winery in Indianapolis, IN; to name a few).  Christmas Shop in West Virginia; Antique Shops in Berea, Kentucky; seeing the sunrise in the Blue Ridge Mountains; or eating creamy Yankee Grits in Georgetown, South Carolina! The best!

A fulfilling road trip requires a certain amount of expectation mixed in with some chill. These road trips fill my tank with hope and love.

I think about these road trips as I go through my season of transition, Before I get to my next city of residence, what gems will I experience along the way?

Many have listened to me talk about the craziness of my world. Yes, it is chaotic, yet I pray that I can remember to slow down and be reminded of my road trips. Before getting to your final destinations, remember to look out for the gems along the way.
